Meet Na’siya and Ja’sayah
St. George’s YouthNet encourages neighbourhood kids to discover their talents, gain self-confidence and dream of bright futures. But if you ask Na’siya and Ja’sayah, spending time there is all about having fun!
Na’siya is a four-year veteran of their neighbourhood-based lunch, after-school and summer camp programs, while her younger sister Ja’sayah has been attending for three years. It’s clear both girls are big fans.
“You get to learn a lot of new things you’ve never done before. We do cooking, gym games, dance and drama camp, science camp, business camp, hiking and junior camping,” says Na’siya, with Ja’saya nodding in agreement. “Dance camp, that’s my favourite.”
Based in Halifax’s North end, YouthNet provides free programs to neighbourhood youth from 7 to 17 with the help of funding they get from United Way Halifax. Kids at YouthNet are exposed to a wide variety of programming and week-long themed summer camps. Their informal mantra is “We discover talent. We make friends. And we inspire dreams.”
The girls’ mother, Natasha, credits YouthNet’s programming and summer camps with the positive growth she has seen in Na’siya and Ja’sayah. “The whole program is amazing.”
Sarah Krahn, Program Coordinator of YouthNet, agrees that both girls were very shy when they started to coming to YouthNet and have blossomed over time.
“Now they are eager to try everything, every single day, and they’ve become really great leaders to the rest of the kids.”
YouthNet is just fun. You get to learn a lot of new things you’ve never done before. We do cooking, gym games, dance and drama camp, science camp, business camp, hiking and junior camping.
