In 1925, women in our community knocked on doors to raise money for United Way's Community Chest. Women United for Community continues this tradition! Thirteen leading women (including sisters and colleagues) and one young girl are raising $85,000 in an online door-to-door campaign in honour of United Way's 85th Anniversary. visit www.womenunited.ca to support them.

I believe in my future.

Riley ParisI am a grade 4 student in French Immersion. I like to hang out with my friends, swim, run, and watch movies. My sister and I go to Ward 5 Community Centre to an after school program that is funded by United Way’s Community Fund. We love being there with our friends and having a safe place to go after school.

I’d like to be a veterinarian when I grow up.

Riley Paris.

I believe in possibility.

carole_olsen__joanne_williams_possibilityEvery day 51,000 students from across our region come to school in the Halifax Regional School Board. Some are with us from early in the morning until late in the day but we never stop thinking about how we can meet their needs. We support United Way because we believe in the possibility that all children can learn and all children can grow up to be contributing members of our great municipality.

By working together we will make a better tomorrow for today’s children. We are honoured to support the efforts of the United Way. We believe in possibility and our collective responsibility to ensure that we reach out to help others in whatever manner we can.

Taking action pays dividends for so many. We hope you will join us in our support of this worthy initiative.

I believe that a safe, supportive community is everyone’s responsibility.

Tammy_Mercier_SafeI have worked in the Investment and Financial Services industry for over 17 years and now my investment has turned to community.

As a mother of two daughters, it is my right and privilege to pass on the legacy of compassion and caring and the collaborative effort to have business help community.

Tammy Mercier
Financial Planner, BMO Investments Inc.

I believe that everyone needs help and everyone can offer help.

Lisa__Lydia_Bugden_HelpAs young girls we learned first-hand, the power of compassionate women working to better their communities. One grandmother opened her home and comforted strangers, the other shared her many talents with the hospital auxiliary. And our mother helped to raise more than her own four children.

Women United for Community gives us a chance to say thank you to the women who showed us the way. It’s also our chance to teach our own daughters the valuable lesson of giving.

I believe that every person has value.

Gwen_Haliburton_ValueUnited Way of Halifax Region is an outstanding organization and I have been privileged to serve as a United Way volunteer in a number of ways, both locally and nationally.

My belief in women as true agents of change, has been reinforced by my experience as a host of a weekly television program where I was fortunate to interview many women who are making amazing contributions to our community.

Gwen Haliburton
Committed Community Volunteer

I believe that diversity is vital.

Carolyn_Davis_Stewart_DiversityMy mother and her girlfriends used to canvass doo-to-door for the United Way with their donation boxes in hand – networking the old fashioned way -- to support the foundation of this vital community resource. Today I am humbled to be chosen as a “change agent” for the United way and am proud to be a part of such an historic tradition of women making a difference in our city.

I believe that everyone’s potential can be realized.

Dr._Joanna_Zed_PotentialI feel that supporting those in need in our community is integral to the success of our community and a responsibility that we all can share. I have been a family physician in Nova Scotia since 1989 and for the last ten years I have practiced with Camphill Family Medicine, a teaching practice with Dalhousie Family Medicine. As a family physician, I have a unique opportunity to work with people to find solutions to the numerous and often complex challenges they face. Given the limited resources we have available to assist patients, I appreciate on an almost daily basis, how fortunate we are to have organizations such as the United Way to provide support.

The health of our community is the responsibility of every member of our community and I believe that we all have something to give.

Dr Joanna Zed
Family Physician, Capital Health

I believe that everyone deserves respect.

Courtney_Larkin_RespectAs a young professional who has grown up in Cole Harbour and graduated from a post secondary education institution in Halifax, I believe that everyone deserves respect.

I have had the opportunity to work closely with our United Way and have seen the remarkable impact it has continued to make throughout our community. I believe that together we can use our skills and build on our successes; together we can provide people in our community with more opportunities for growth; and together we can create a supportive and respectful community.

Please generously support our United Way of Halifax Region because together we can!

Courtney Larkin
Campaign Manager, United Way of Halifax Region

I believe that everyone has something to contribute

Dr._Daurene_Lewis_ContributeAs a nurse, nursing instructor, business owner, municipal leader, health care administrator and educator, I have been heavily involved in my local community for many years. After becoming Mayor of Annapolis Royal over 25 years ago, I became involved in provincial, national and international initiatives. All of my education and practice has revolved around personal and community capacity building.

The United Way of Halifax Region’s outcomes based approach facilitates positive results for the groups and communities it supports. This is very much in alignment with our personal values.

Dr. Daurene Lewis, C.M.
Principal, Institute of Technology Campus, NSCC

I believe that the success of our community depends on the people who live in it.

Christine_Wilson_SuccessAn 85th Anniversary is a milestone and I like to find something to celebrate every day. I believe that by supporting the United Way’s Women United for Community Campaign, you can consider yourself a partner of an organization that is recognized as a leader in supporting social programs and community development. The impact of our donations can be measured and quantified. We should all set high standards for our community and try to make an impact today.

Let’s celebrate that we live in a fantastic place because we care.

I believe in my community.

Chris Power & Mary-Lou Donnelly"As sisters we have been blessed to live in this wonderful community most our lives, we are delighted to be participants in the Women United for Community Campaign.

Giving back was a basic value in the Flynn family, starting with our parents who were so totally engaged in the community. We believe that our involvement in this wonderful initiative is but one way to continue their legacy of helping those in need.

Together, we will be all that much stronger!"

Mary-Lou Donnelly, President, Canadian Teachers Federation
