Major Gifts and Planned Giving

United Way of Halifax Region recognizes the critical role of philanthropy in providing additional resources to fund United Way neighbourhood initiatives and the growing financial needs of our funded agencies. As a result there are different options to help United Way of Halifax Region reach its goals.

There are new opportunities through United Way directed projects to build stronger, healthier communities within our region. To carry out this important work we require the sustained support of individuals.

Major Gifts

The decision by an individual to make a major gift donation of $10,000 or more has a very significant and positive impact on our community. This donation will help support 55 agencies and over 100 programs throughout HRM. It can also be used to further our work at the neighbourhood level including the provision of neighbourhood grants that allow groups of residents to take collective action to better their neighbourhood through their own initiative and desire to make a positive difference. We are currently working with residents in Spryfield and Dartmouth North.

Major gifts can be made during a person’s lifetime or be a part of their legacy through a planned gift in their will.

Planned Giving

A planned gift is a thoughtful and significant gift that can be made during a person’s lifetime or as a legacy gift as part of their estate. All such gifts are very meaningful as they are an expression of a donor’s beliefs and values. United Way of Halifax Region is honoured to be the recipient of planned gifts and is committed to maximize the impact of these gifts as we build an extraordinary community.

Planned giving is the process of designing charitable gifts so you – the donor – realize your philanthropic objectives while maximizing income tax and other financial benefits.  There are many factors to consider when deciding if you should make a significant donation during your lifetime or through a bequest. Some donors, wishing to see how their gift is used and also to avoid probate fees or possible estate problems, opt to give during their lifetime. Others prefer to make a bequest, because this lets them maintain full control of their assets throughout their life. Whatever route you choose, it’s important to plan it carefully and to get professional advice from your accountant, lawyer and financial advisor.

United Way of Halifax Region’s Endowment Fund was established in 2004 in response to the growing desire from our donors to support United Way through a legacy gift. Governed by the Board of Trustees, the Endowment Fund is administered by a recognized financial advisor to ensure funds will be sustained for future community requirements.

Gifts of certain types of appreciated assets, such as securities and real estate are very popular and may provide you with even greater tax benefits than charitable gifts made in cash. click HERE to read more.
