“When neighbours know neighbours, neighbourhoods are healthier, safer and more active places to live.”
Action for Neighbourhood Change ignited resident enthusiasm, engagement and leadership in Spryfield and the same spirit now has moved to Dartmouth North. The process is simple:
- Identify strengths of residents
- Encourage them to get involved and develop a vision
- Provide seed funding for community-led projects
- Support the leaders as they step up to work to change their neighbourhood.

Residents of Dartmouth North with an interest in filmmaking created three short videos showing their community through the eyes of the people who live and work there. The Dartmouth North Film Project was an opportunity for community memebers to learn all aspects of documentary filmmaking, to tell their own stories, to highlight themes in the community that are important to them, and to get to know their neighbours better. Local filmmaker Ariella Pahlke worked with each group as mentor director and facilitated the project together with Neighbourhood Coordinator Linda Rowe.

Pinecrest
Pinecrest Drive has a notorious reputation in all of HRM. A group of local residents wanted to find out why, and how people on the street feel about where they live
Back Then...
Past and present residents of Dartmouth North take us back in time, sharing memeories from their personal histories and the history of their community.
Taking Action
By highlighting three community initiatives that are making positive changes in the area, this documentatry provides an alternative to the negative image of Dartmouth North normally portrayed by the media.
