Sarah's Story

When you give to United Way you help to ensure everyone can have a healthy life and participate in the community.

When Sarah teased other children, Boys and Girls Club of Preston organizers became concerned. She tried to behave as if she was strong and independent, but she expressed her frustrations and anger in an aggressive way.

When the Junior Leader Program was established and Sarah was paired with a staff member to assist in day to day activities her attitude began to change. She coordinated games and events for youth and also organized schedules to prepare for the days to come. Sarah had found a positive outlet in which she was able to express herself in a constructive manner.

This new role helped Sarah see the importance of her contributions and ultimately boosted her self-esteem. As a result of her new responsibilities, Sarah was following rules and interacting with others on a regular basis. The transformation was obvious at school too. Her mother said "I don’t know what you did with her but she is not the same girl. Sarah has such compassion for others now. Thank you very much."

“Our youth are encouraged to get involved in their communities and actively participate in making them better places to live,” says Margaret, the executive director of the club. “The Junior Leadership Program gives them that extra knowledge needed to prepare them for future situations.”

You can help fund a program like this one by donating to United Way’s Community Fund. Sarah is one of the 65% of participants who reported they gained self control, confidence and were able to stand up against bullying. Your donation supports possibility and potential for children, youth, seniors and neighborhoods right here in our community.
