Adam's Story

When you give to United Way you ensure that everyone’s potential can be realized

Adam is 30 years-old and has been a resident at Metro Community Housing Association (MCHA) for the last seven years. It is a community based agency that provides life skills support and residential services to people who have experienced mental health challenges. At one time Adam’s future seemed bleak.

In Adam’s own words, "Before Metro Community Housing Association, I suffered from social anxieties and a phobia of communicating with some peers and professionals in day to day life. Now thanks to Metro, I have torn down the wall of stigma, and built a new wall of skill, knowledge, self respect and friendship."

Today he is the co-op intern and helps run the Community Access Co-op Program at Metro Community Housing. A large portion of this program is the internal newsletter that he co-writes, edits and distributes to people in the Metro Housing Community. He also meets with the people who submit articles to establish accuracy and consistency, so everyone’s voice is heard.

The organization created a stepping stone for Adam to move into a community setting and get engaged. Adam has gained self confidence and the determination to speak out and help eradicate those misconceptions that surround mental health. He now encourages others to speak out about living with mental health difficulties.

It is evident that Adam greatly benefited from the programs at Metro Community Housing Association. You can help fund a program like this by donating to United Way’s Community Fund. Your donation supports possibility and potential for children, youth, seniors and neighbourhoods right here in our community.
