Vision, Mission & Principles

Vision

We envision a community where:
• neighbourhoods are thriving, supportive and safe places;
• community partners share knowledge, resources, skills and services; and
• everyone can have a healthy life and participate in the community.

Mission

United Way brings people and organizations together to build vibrant neighbourhoods and strengthen our community.

Principles

The guiding principles are the foundation of our organizational commitment and organizational behaviour.

  • Asset-Based
Resources are distributed to build on skills, knowledge and abilities shared by people in the community.

  • Capacity Building
Expanding the skills that exist to increase capacity will help individuals and organizations meet ongoing challenges and maximize new opportunities.

  • Making a Measurable Difference
Initiatives funded by United Way of Halifax Region are required to demonstrate the results of their work.

  • Flexibility
Flexibility in funding to diverse organizations ensures there is a broad spectrum of support across the community.

  • Collaboration
Organizations working together can do much more than if they operate in isolation.

  • Stewardship
United Way is accountable to donors and the community to ensure funds are distributed effectively, efficiently and that funded agencies are accountable for the funds they receive. The stewardship role is reflected in an agreement governing the contract between the funded organization and United Way.

Values

I believe in my community.
I believe its success depends on the people who live in it.
That everyone has something to contribute.
That everyone deserves respect.
That everyone's potential can be realized.
That diversity is vital.
That everyone has value.
That everyone needs help and everyone can offer help.
That a safe supportive community is everyone's responsibility.
I believe in possibility.
